During my education I gained experience in various settings. For example, I did an internship at the Beatrixoord, the rehabilitation center of the University Medical Center Groningen, where I was responsible for the rehabilitation of patients with lung complaints. I gave a wide range of treatment forms, including walking training, cycling training and hydrotherapy.
Then I went to South Africa. Here I did an internship in an orthopedic children’s hospital, the Maitland Cottage Hospital in Cape Town. During this internship I learned that you can make a big difference with little medical equipment and that communication is one of the most important aspects of my profession.
During my graduation I did an internship at a primary care practice aimed at the elderly, which sparked my interest in this patient group. Especially being able to contribute to the patient’s independence and self-reliance are important key points for me. I like to lend a listening ear to find out why someone is limited in their independence.
I think it is very important that everyone feels understood. As a physiotherapist I know the positive effects of exercise and sports, but not all patients are also familiar with this. I mainly focus my treatment on guiding during the rehabilitation process, by offering sports / games. My goal is to offer care at everyone’s level, in which the patient is central and to become aware of the importance of exercise!
